Single by choice…

Last week, Statistics Canada released data on the family from the 2011 Census. There was some interesting stuff in there, at least for those of us who accept that interesting and statistics can ever be lumped together in the same sentence.

Turns out, for the first time, there were more one-person households than households of couples with children. In fact, there is now a whopping 27% of households that are singles in Canada. Either we singles are on the rise or some couples are seriously slacking off by not having children.

But this got me to thinking – am I my own family?

Statistics Canada would say no. Their definition of a family is any married or common-law couple, whether they have children or not or any lone-parent households with children. So, I’m not a family.

My sister kindly pointed out that in the “olden days” an unmarried woman would…

I’m obsessed with mannequins & store windows…

This store window on King Street (Charleston, South Carolina) was fascinating! I don’t know how long it had been there, but it looked like forever. And I hope they never change it!

Oooohhhh, Opie….

I LOVE FX’s “Sons of Anarchy”!  It’s such an exciting glimpse into a world I wouldn’t see any other way, which is what movies and television can do so well (when they will).  But it’s SO jarring when they do it really well, as SOA did last night.  It’s a reminder that this is a real world, not just television, and these things really happen in real life.  Characters you like don’t always get saved at the last minute by a compassionate writer; at least not on SOA.  I’ll miss Opie, but I’ll love Jax’s revenge (if only he’d thought to threaten the prison guard BEFORE the fight!).  Duh.

But the episode is really more of an indictment of our prison system.  Since most of SOA is BRUTALLY realistic, I can only believe that this sort of thing happens in prisons more often than anyone would care to believe.  And that’s appalling.  I never want to go to prison (in case you were wondering) — I think I’m scared straight.

I’m on my way…

Orange you glad I didn’t say…

I’m obsessed with road trips, and one of my favorite local road trips is old Route 66 (tons of photos still to come – you’ll probably get sick of them). As every weekend approaches I start to think about throwing the dog in the car and hitting the road. I’m lucky that there are so many great, diverse day trips here in Southern California.

This shot is from the car (I was NOT driving) (this time), and it’s a stretch of Route 66 just outside of Oro Grande, California — somewhere between Victorville and Barstow, in the Mojave Desert. I was SO lucky to spot that ORANGE Corvette passing by the ORANGE gas station!

This beautiful beast is a RESCUE.  Colby (his original name was Kobe, but I hate Kobe Bryant) was 3 years old when he was rescued from a San Diego-area animal shelter by a local Australian Shepherd rescue group.  He’s been with me for almost 9 years now, and is one of many reasons that I volunteer for an LA-area rescue group called The Rescue Train, http://TheRescueTrain.org .  We’re currently vying for a cash award from Chase on Facebook that would allow us to make a mobile spay/neuter program available — that’s the way to make a difference in pet over-population.

If you have TWO MINUTES to spare, please click on the link below and go to Facebook and VOTE for the Rescue Train.  It’s easy…it’s free…and it will make a difference.  Thank you so much for your consideration.

UPDATE:  WE DID IT — WE WON A $10,000 GRANT FROM CHASE!!!  Awesome.

Drive-by shooting…

I do this all the time — shoot from the car. And most of the time I’m driving. I’ve gotten really good at pointing and shooting. Sometimes it works…sometimes it sucks. That’s the brilliance of digital photography — it never hurts to try!

We were on one of our Route 66 road trips in the middle of the Mojave Desert in California, and I’d seen this sign several times but never in time to stop and grab it. It’s on old Route 66, and we were on the freeway right beside it. Grabbed it at the last minute but since it was soft (blurry), I decided to convert to B/W and isolate the colors. I have this printed on a 20×30 canvas in my office and I love it!!!
