This is the front of a building in Burano Island — those scrolls are painted on the building…not Photoshop. The entire island looks Photoshopped!

I’m obsessed with mannequins & store windows…

Orange you glad I didn’t say…

I’m obsessed with road trips, and one of my favorite local road trips is old Route 66 (tons of photos still to come – you’ll probably get sick of them). As every weekend approaches I start to think about throwing the dog in the car and hitting the road. I’m lucky that there are so many great, diverse day trips here in Southern California.

This shot is from the car (I was NOT driving) (this time), and it’s a stretch of Route 66 just outside of Oro Grande, California — somewhere between Victorville and Barstow, in the Mojave Desert. I was SO lucky to spot that ORANGE Corvette passing by the ORANGE gas station!

Life is good…

Drive-by shooting…

I do this all the time — shoot from the car. And most of the time I’m driving. I’ve gotten really good at pointing and shooting. Sometimes it works…sometimes it sucks. That’s the brilliance of digital photography — it never hurts to try!

We were on one of our Route 66 road trips in the middle of the Mojave Desert in California, and I’d seen this sign several times but never in time to stop and grab it. It’s on old Route 66, and we were on the freeway right beside it. Grabbed it at the last minute but since it was soft (blurry), I decided to convert to B/W and isolate the colors. I have this printed on a 20×30 canvas in my office and I love it!!!

Look at that face…

One of the things I obsess about is dogs…and animal rescue. My own Colby, a pure-bred Australian Shepherd (many photos to come), is a rescue from a San Diego-area shelter.

This beauty is long-gone, but there are plenty more available and you can meet many of them at the upcoming Race for the Rescues, sponsored by The Rescue Train and benefitting Los Angeles-area non-profit animal rescue organizations. It’s Sunday, October 7 at the famous Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Once again hosted by the fabulous JANE LYNCH of “Glee.” Details here: http://RaceForTheRescues.org

If you can’t attend but would like to make a contribution, I’m happy to take your money! Click here: http://www.racefortherescues.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=1012420&supId=366811129

How much is that doggie in the window?

Just a snap of a face I couldn’t resist on my way to lunch last week.  Someone had thoughtfully cut a viewing window for this adorable pooch at a construction site.  We stood there for 2-3 minutes and he never moved anything but his eyes!!!

My Commute…

I sometimes amuse myself on the way to work — I love this vanity plate on a plumbing truck on the 405 freeway in Los Angeles.  All plumbers should have a sense of humor!

I love road trips…

This is Route 66 in the Arizona desert, heading toward the California state line. And yes, I’m standing (maybe sitting) in the middle of the road. That’s a Burma Shave sign in the distance (smile if you understand that).

Be careful out there on this travel weekend, folks!!!

Some mornings you’re rewarded for getting up early…

I love the Urban Country movement, where planned communities are oases of greenbelts, man-made lakes, and planned “wilderness.” I live in such a community in Southern California, and this is my morning walk. If you didn’t know it was just miles from the metropolis of Los Angeles, you’d think this is a country lane. When I first moved here 13 years ago there was a white fence along the sides of the road and I used to pretend that I was on my ranch, driving up to the majestic ranch house (ala South Fork), or stopping by the bunkhouse (but that’s another story).
